Amazon Why we own it : Amazon may be widely known for online shopping, but its cloud business is the real breadwinner. While an International e-commerce sales increase of 10% to $31.94 billion missed estimates, the segment saw $903 million in operating income. Guidance Amazon expects second-quarter net sales to be between $144 billion to $149 billion, growing 7% to 11% year over year. However, thanks to disciplined cost management, operating income guidance is expected to come in much closer to the mark at $10 billion to $14 billion versus $12.73 billion expected. The midpoint of the sales and operating income estimates point to an operating margin target of 8.2%, which compares with an 8.5% estimate for the second quarter.

Some of Amazon's spending is likely to go toward its custom AI chips, known as Trainium and Inferentia. But the Seattle-based tech giant also buys Nvidia chips. On Thursday's post-earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy said AWS offers the "most expansive collection of compute instances with Nvidia chips." Alphabet's spending on AI chips has typically been split between its custom chips designed in partnership with Broadcom, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and Nvidia's offerings. Including networking products that stitch together parts of the data center, about 15% of Broadcom's semiconductor revenue was tied to generative AI spending in fiscal 2023.

Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesBEIJING — Most consumers in China are planning to keep a lid on spending during this year's Singles Day shopping festival, which ends Nov. 11. That's according to a survey of more than 3,000 consumers in the country by Bain and Company, released Tuesday. Originally launched by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba , Singles Day has expanded from a one-day shopping festival into a multi-week period of shopping promotions across different online platforms in China. Bain estimates that including other platforms, Singles Day e-commerce GMV rose by 3% to 934 billion yuan ($128.25 billion) in 2022. When factoring in another 181 billion yuan in livestreaming and content-led e-commerce, the total GMV for last year's festival topped 1 trillion yuan ($140 billion), the report said.

The pickle-wardrobe mania is emblematic of what sets TikTok Shop apart from e-commerce competitors like Shopify and Amazon. Just like TikTok's non-shopping content, TikTok Shop is built around viral videos, be it a surge in viewer interest in pickle-jar sweatshirts or a mad rush to buy freeze-dried Skittles . For UK sellers, chasing virality still seems to be the defining characteristic of the TikTok Shop experience. Jessica Slone runs TikTok shop Bad Addiction Boutique, which has sold tens of thousands of pickle-jar sweatshirts. "TikTok Shop is kind of this roller coaster, and right now it's on this amazing uphill journey.

KARACHI, Pakistan, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Pakistani ecommerce logistics startup Rider, backed by YCombinator, is looking into acquiring BlueEx (UNIV.PSX) the only listed Express Courier Logistics Company in Pakistan, it told Reuters on Thursday. "We are carving out and acquiring the e-commerce logistics business which currently operates under the brand name BlueEx. This is not an acquisition of Universal Network System Limited as a whole," said Salman Allana, founder and CEO of Rider. If the transaction goes through, this will be the first acquisition of a listed company by a startup, and the first major acquisition of a company listed on Pakistan's Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) board at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PAKS.PSX). While Rider has not disclosed the transaction value, it claims the acquisition will make Rider the third largest player in the ecommerce logistics space.

Amazon is inviting sellers to use its own in-house shipping service, called Amazon Shipping. Amazon is significantly expanding its own shipping service that competes with FedEx and UPS. Earlier this week, Amazon invited some sellers to use Amazon Shipping, its own in-house delivery service, according to an email invite seen by Insider. If the merchant used Amazon's fulfillment service, Amazon would decide which delivery service their packages would go through, whether it's UPS or Amazon's own shipping service. However, with Amazon Shipping, sellers now have the choice to use Amazon Shipping directly, even if they are shipping from their own warehouse.

Nick told Insider that Amazon executives join logistics startups because they like to build. Flexport plans to integrate Deliverr, an e-commerce fulfillment company Shopify acquired for $2.1 billion last year, into its global logistics offering. Clark called the Shopify assets the "last piece" the company needed to extend its reach from the manufacturer to the end consumer. It may be the last acquisition needed to complete a "port to porch" service, as Clark described it. In fact, Clark said Amazon could be a compliment or partner to Flexport soon after announcing the Shopify deal. Yea," he said about the kind of end-to-end service Flexport is planning.
The idea that e-commerce will keep growing forever, and betting on it will lead to an almost inevitable rising tide, didn't survive the pandemic. Public flame-outs of entire categories of startups, like ultra-fast deliveries and Amazon seller aggregators, have further demonstrated the boom-and-bust nature of pandemic e-commerce investing. Apple's recent moves to give consumers more online privacy has had ripples through the e-commerce ecosystem, leading investors to take a beat. E-commerce logistics — fulfillment and last-mile delivery — said Sloane is fairly well-saturated at this point, he said. For many retailers, the pandemic offered a harsh lesson in how integrated their stores and their websites weren't, she said.
American Eagle Outfitters built a logistics arm by acquiring two firms in 2021. The head of American Eagle's logistics arm Quiet Platforms is out as the outfit struggles to achieve profitability, according to an internal memo to staff obtained by Insider. Shekar Natarajan was president of Quiet Platforms until he left the company last week, according to the memo. Quiet Platforms is a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Eagle Outfitters. It was built by combining fulfillment and logistics firm Quiet Logistics, which the retailer acquired in 2021 for $350 million, and a much smaller parcel logistics startup called AirTerra, acquired the same year.
New data from Pitney Bowes shows Amazon was the only major carrier that didn't see a drop in 2022. In 2022, delivery companies shipped 21.2 billion packages — 2.2% less than in 2021 but more than 37% higher than 2019. When retailers have less package volume to spread around, the big guys get persuasive with their discounts, Ramachandran said. But in terms of package volume, it was the only major carrier to hold its 2021 package volume in 2022. Like UPS and FedEx, Amazon may also strategically choose not to grow package volume, but not by turning down customers.

Shopify rolled out the latest iteration of its e-commerce logistics service Thursday. Shopify Logistics is a "port to porch" logistics service for even the smallest merchants. Flexport will allow Shopify merchants to get "front of the line access," to space on container ships they'd struggle to get otherwise, Brown said. Shopify rolled the badge, a direct competitor to Amazon's Prime shipping program and its newer "Buy with Prime" feature, out last year and expanded it to all Shopify sellers Thursday. A lot of e-commerce businesses with good products "flame out" because they simply can't hack the operations, Sauceda said.
Prologis, the largest holder of US industrial real estate, beat Q4 expectations last week. As the rest of the real estate market faces layoffs, warehouses are bucking the trend. Prologis CEO Hamid Moghadam said warehouse demand will stay high as other markets crumble. In past recessions, there was plenty of empty warehouse space from the start, causing low prices to get lower. Warehouse space thus becomes an investment in future success.
As of January 8, Chinese citizens may travel out of the country freely for the first time in years. The change could boost Chinese e-commerce powerhouses like Shein and Alibaba. Though there are plenty of dedicated cargo flights in and out of China, more than half of air cargo worldwide travels in the belly of passenger planes. Chinese online retailers stand to benefit even more, said Brian Bourke, chief commercial officer of Seko Logistics, a freight forwarding company that manages transportation for Shein, among other US and Chinese e-commerce giants. Cheaper air cargo rates are likely to encourage even more investment in speed from Shein and others.
Jan 4 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) is in advanced talks to invest in Gatik, a California-based autonomous driving startup, as part of its cloud partnership with the company, two people familiar with the discussions told Reuters. Microsoft plans to invest over $10 million in a financing round that values Gatik at more than $700 million, the sources added. As part of the deal, Gatik will use Microsoft's cloud and edge computing platform Azure in developing autonomous delivery technology for trucks. Like other big tech companies, Microsoft has recently been putting funds into self-driving technology. In November, Ford and Volkswagen shut down their self-driving technology unit, Argo AI, saying that creating self-driving "robotaxis" would be "harder than putting a man on the moon."
The change could boost Chinese e-commerce powerhouses like Shein and Alibaba. Though there are plenty of dedicated cargo flights in and out of China, more than half of air cargo worldwide travels in the belly of passenger planes. Without regular passenger flights, the price to move cargo via plane in and out of China has been sky-high.
But UPS and FedEx have taken the cue and are integrating flexible workers in their own ways. Gig goes mainstreamWhere smaller players sometimes rely entirely on gig workers, UPS and FedEx are incorporating flexible laborers to complement full-time workers where and when deliveries are less consistent or particularly costly. Despite all that growth, the ecosystem around gig workers — regulation, banking, insurance, and more — is underdeveloped. And though gig workers often covet flexibility, they can easily end up with next to no job security and extremely variable earnings. In response, legislators have tended toward blunt force tactics — potentially eliminating all independent contractors in the name of gig workers.

TikTok is diving into e-commerce as it builds out a US fulfillment and shipping logistics team. As TikTok takes its initial steps into the physical side of e-commerce, several logistics experts told Insider not to expect the company to follow Amazon's playbook. "If you want to be anything like what Amazon has built you are $100 billion behind," Matthew Hertz, cofounder of e-commerce logistics consultancy Second Marathon, said. Shein is one Chinese company that has managed this transition successfully, by focusing on the niche but fast-growing field of cross-border e-commerce logistics. Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten acquired two US fulfillment companies in 2019 only to combine them and sell them back to the founder of one this year.
Last year, industry insiders predicted that 2022 would be the year of social shopping in the US. As the year closes, here's the state of play when it comes to social shopping. From TikTok to YouTube, companies introduced features to encourage users to shop in their apps — including native checkout — and shoppable livestreams, photos, and videos. "Everybody is trying to beef up their infrastructure for social commerce," Jason Goldberg, the chief commerce-strategy officer at Publicis Groupe, told Insider. Here's the current state of play in social shopping:
TikTok is hiring for a slew of new roles around e-commerce fulfillment in the US, Axios reported. New staff will assist with US e-commerce logistics, as well as plan and design fulfillment centers. TikTok is arming itself for a looming e-commerce battle as it staffs up to offer fulfillment services in the US. Social platforms have had a tough time breaking into e-commerceEarly efforts in social shopping have been rocky for social-media platforms in the US. Adding a new layer of fulfillment services for merchants suggests TikTok isn't thinking short-term about how it can capitalize on e-commerce, Goldberg said.

CNN —While seemingly every social media app is copying TikTok, TikTok now appears to be copying Amazon’s playbook. Like other social networks, TikTok has expanded into e-commerce to add revenue opportunities. TikTok currently offers a shopping option called TikTok Shop in select markets, including the UK and Indonesia, which lets creators and merchants sell products through the platform. But with the latest job postings, which were first reported by Axios, TikTok seems to want to go even further. A TikTok spokesperson declined to elaborate on the latest roles.
